I’ve had a 2015 C300 loaner for the past week. The car comes with Collision prevention standard which an idiot on the highway helped me test.
Short Version:
It works!
Long version:
I was on a highway doing about 60 mph in the left lane. I see that traffic is slowing down a lot ahead in the right lanes so I start braking to give me and the car ahead of me some space. I drop back about 7 car lengths and a black Nissan Maxima in the center lane jumps out 3 car lengths in front of me. Not a signal, not a slow creep, not even a fuckin hand out the window.
I yelled out “shit!” and the car instantly beeped 3 times while also applying maximum brake pressure and tightening the seat belt. I had my foot pressing on brake already but I felt when pedal dropped. I came within a few inches of him as he picked up speed.
I just kept driving after a bunch of “Holy Shits and WTFs” my passenger and I just kept saying how the car saved us. I’m not saying anyone would’ve died but there would have been a lot of damage and possibly some injuries. The car did what it had to do and I hope to never test it again.
Some people dislike the amount of nannies inside modern cars but these things exist because the amount of idiots driving around increases year over year [see graph]. If a system helps me avoid a clueless person from causing a major accident I’m all for it.
In my car I probably would’ve been screwed. I’ve got better brakes and stickier tires so hopefully that would’ve helped but the 2015 C300 is alright in my book.

Solid. Not all tech is bad, especially when it comes to safety. People complained about seatbelts, too.
Also, for your graph, [citation needed].

People still fucking complain about seat belts. And motorcycle helmets.

Yup. People hate a paternalistic state.

Does it also activate the horn and a big LED middle finger on the front as well?

Yeah I love safety equipment and I have to say, safety figures into my decision making when I buy a car, especially when I’m picking a car for the family. I drive something with a 4 star NCAP and the last 2 family cars have had 5 star.

It really should use that glowing Mercedes logo for something useful.

This is one of the few success stories I’ve heard first hand, thanks. I still think that its a bit of a “stars aligning” scenario though:
That random thing happened to activate the system
The driver was paying attention regardless
The system actually worked as described
However, if you said you were on the brakes, do you not think you would have stopped in time? This kid of jerkass move happens to me all the time and It hasn’t resulting in a wreck because I was able to stop in time.
Lastly, and I’m really not trying to discount your story which i think is really cool, but the irony is that the expensive damage that would have occurred had the system not been able to slow you in time (lets say the car pulled out with just too little time to stop, even for the computer)...would have been replacing these system components.

Holy shit look at dis gap.

I will be making sure any car I get going forward has this either standard or optioned.

Sad. I don’t even realize my seatbelt is on because I am conditioned to put it on the minute I get in the car. If a seatbelt is that bothersome to some people they should think about dropping a few pounds.

Funny enough this loaner is optioned with the illuminated star!

I wish it activated a PA system so I can yell out all my obscenities at the stupid driver.

Those systems pre-charge the brakes as well, so even if you do react in time as well, the brakes are already ready to go much faster then if the system wasn’t there at all.

Honestly I don’t know if I would’ve stopped in time. I would like to think I would have but to be honest this was the first time I’ve ever panic stopped (that’s the right phrase right?) at highway speeds. I had just before stepped on the brakes to slow down from 60 to like 45-50 MPH and to give myself some space but I was looking so far ahead to see what was causing the traffic build up that I didn’t even think this guy was going to jump out that way and so suddenly.
The way I saw it was the car managed to react about a second or less faster than I did, and I have to do better in the future by slowing down even more so when I see traffic building in lanes that I am not in.

They also pre-tension the seat belts, the seatbelt sucked me and my passenger back like a vice.

I assure you it’s the angle of the pic.

I really wasn’t a factor before but going forward I will have this on my car standard or optioned.

I can’t speak for this specific situation, but the Mercedes has a system called brake assist plus which works with the collision prevention assist. The system will increase the braking pressure depending on the distance in front and while actually adjust it to make sure you don't stop too short and get rear ended.

They’ve gotten to you.

I made a comment about ABS and I love the mouthbreathers who still swear their foot technique is good enough to beat ABS. *Maybe* in a car on slicks, on perfect pavement, on a racetrack, you *might* make it close, perhaps...... But yes, people are idiots.

Dang, I want adaptative cruise control coupled with that thing.

It’s available with the Driver Assistance Package which includes the car being able to drive itself as well as turn at speeds under 37 MPH as long as you have one hand on the wheel just like the S Class.

MB probably planned this from the start. They see that my 2014 C Class lease is ending next year so they wanted to get me into a well optioned loaner, then paid this guy in the Nissan to “cut me off” therefore causing the car to save my life and make me now seriously consider upgrading.
Well that planned worked lol.

No, I mean, I want that in my car. Sure that model has it, I wish mine had.
